Every story has to have conflict, and how you set the emotional stakes around that conflict can mean the difference between an engaged audience of readers or listeners ready to interact further, or a bored (even resentful) group of people who may not remember you.
Professional content, whether it is brand stories, case studies, or presentations, can be especially difficult in setting stakes. Stories often fall either at the shallow end of the spectrum with little to no tension to hold the audience’s attention, or get in over their heads with stakes too high – losing the audience by inflating the importance.
In this workshop, we will navigate the balance of setting appropriate and authentic stakes in professional stories. Through discussion and activities, participants will examine their own stories to define and articulate meaningful stakes, and will leave with a better understanding of how to connect to their audiences by telling why they should care.
